Description

Included on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, the Gold Brook covered bridge was built in 1844, and is the only 19th-century covered bridge in the state of Vermont that utilizes Howe trusses. The road it connects is still regularly used and the bridge attracts many history, engineering and folklore enthusiasts alike. There is a local legend about a young woman named Emily who waited in vain for her fiancée to come and fetch her so they could elope, only to be left on her own beside the bridge. Her spirit is still said to haunt the area, searching for the one who left her behind, and the bridge is often referred to as Emily’s Bridge, forever preserving a piece of Vermont folklore.
